Yesterday we conducted some research on behalf of http://www.digitaleconomyact.info into how common unsecured wifi was. The worry is that the digital economy act means people are responsible what is done using their internet connection, however many people are unaware of how to secure their equipment or why they should. As we've already been helping our customers with setting up public wifi with the confines of the act, it seemed an ideal project to assist with. Out of 726 access points surveyed, 45% were either running with easily crackable WEP encryption or with no encryption at all. That means 45% of people could be disconnect without doing anything wrong themselves. An annoyance as a home user, but potentially disasterous for a small business. It also means anyone with easily available free software can snoop on all their wifi communication, including emails and passwords. If you'd like help securing your wifi, or in setting up public wifi, please contact us.
